The Legacy: An Elder’s Vision for our Sustainable Future
By David Suzuki (Allen & Unwin, $26.99, hardback, 113 pages)
Award-winning scientist, environmentalist, broadcaster and author, David Suzuki’s passion is evident after spending more than four decades educating people about science and environmental issues.
Presenting his visions for a better future, one of the planet’s pre-eminent elders explains how we arrived to where we are today.
Based on the Legacy Lecture he delivered at the University of British Columbia in December 2009, he elaborates on “offering a future that is possible, one rich in joy, happiness and meaning”.
Dr Suzuki also points on that “only by confronting the enormity and unsustainability of our impact on the biosphere will we take the search for alternative ways to live as seriously as we must”.
One answer is to “respond collectively” to the problems we face since our relationship with the planet has changed. There has been a tripling of the world’s population, a greatly increased ecological footprint through the global economy and an enormous growth in technological capacity.
These changes have had a dire effect on the earth’s ecosystems and consequently on our own well-being.
“The crisis is of our own making and we must realise that the laws of nature have priority over the forces of economics and that the planet simply cannot sustain unfettered growth,” Dr Suzuki says.
Along with recognising limits of scientific reductionism and the need to adopt a more holistic point of view, he claims that “change begins with each of us”.
He feels driven by a sense of urgency and is filled with hope of a future “rich in opportunity, beauty, wonder and companionship with the rest of Creation. All it takes is the imagination to dream it and the will to make the dream reality”.
The Legacy is a bequest, a record of his accumulated wisdom with “faith in the inherent generosity of Mother Earth”.
