Chronic pain has been described as a silent epidemic and almost everyone experiences it in some way, shape or form at some time or another.
   What may be surprising is that approximately 20 per cent of the population have what is called chronic or persisting pain at any one time.
   Estimates are that about 10 per cent of the population of countries such as Australia, UK, the US, Canada and those of northern Europe report that persisting pain is interfering in their daily life.
   Aches and pains cannot always be successfully treated, but the combination of approaches provided in Manage Your Pain will enable you to do something practical and positive to improve your life.

   It is a self-help book that can be used as part of a program worked out with your doctor, clinical psychologist and/or therapist.
   The authors have drawn on the latest scientific research and extensive clinical experience to show you how to live with pain. Manage Your Pain strives to give a better understanding of your pain and minimise the impact it has on your life.
   This third edition is based on the successful ADAPT Program at the University of Sydney Pain Management and Research Centre at the Royal North Shore Hospital.
   Dr Michael Nicholas, Dr Allan Molloy, Lois Tonkin and Lee Beeston are senior members of the multidisciplinary ADAPT team at the Centre. The program is now used by other pain clinics around Australia and the world.
   Methods taught in the course are more effective than just taking medication alone, but it will only be helpful if a “concerted effort” is put into it.
   The book claims not to have all the answers and it cannot offer instant relief.
   Instead, it describes “an approach to managing pain in which you, the person in pain, are expected to play an active and ongoing role”. The onus is on you to ensure a personal victory!
