Ball back at CSIRO
Dr Lewis Ball has been appointed as Chief for CSIRO’s Astronomy and Space Science (CASS) division.
   Dr Ball returns to CSIRO from his present role as Deputy Director at the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
   Prior to that he had been with CSIRO for nine years in a number of management roles including leadership of CSIRO’s astronomy division from February 2009 to May 2010, first as Acting Director of the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) and then as Acting Chief of Astronomy and Space Science.
   He is expected to take up his position on 18 March.

Professor Warrick Couch has been appointed as the Director of the Australian Astronomical Observatory.
   The AAO is a division of the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.
   Professor Couch was joint winner of the Gruber Cosmology Prize in 2007, is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and has served as the President of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

Ware to Sounds position
Live music advocate and policy consultant, Dr Ianto Ware has been appointed as the National Live Music Coordinator for Sounds Australia.
   The creation of the new position is part of a $3 million commitment to boost industry innovation, music export and address skills development in the live music sector.

Synchrotron posts
New appointments at the Australian Synchrotron have been announced by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
   Professor Andrew Peele has been appointed as the interim Director of the Synchrotron while Professor Michael James will serve as interim Head of Science with Michael Beckett appointed as the General Manager of Operations.

Merit Commissioner reappointed
Annwyn Godwin has been reappointed as the Merit Protection Commissioner for a further five-year term.
   The role of Merit Protection Commissioner is covered by the Merit and Transparency Guidelines, which do not require a selection process when an incumbent is reappointed. 
   The original appointment was based on a competitive merit process and the latest term will take effect from 25 January.

Commission appoints two
Two new part-time commissioners have been appointed to the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC).
   Justice John Middleton and Justice Nye Perram have both been appointed for a period of three years.
   They replace Justice Susan Kenny who has served as a standing part-time commissioner since 2003 and will join part-time Commissioner Justice Berna Collier.
   The ALRC said part-time Commissioners provided guidance to the Commission in identifying the major issues involved in a particular inquiry, advice in the research and consultation effort and contributed to the process of formulating final recommendations for legal reform.

Tongan posting
Brett Aldam has been appointed Australia’s next High Commissioner to Tonga.
   Mr Aldam has previously served as the Australian High Commissioner to the Republic of Kiribati along with posts in Nairobi and Suva.
   He is expected to take up his appointment in February, replacing Thomas Roth.

Top ABC vacancy
The Director of Television at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has announced his intention to step down.
   Kim Dalton has served in the role for seven years and is expected to leave in mid-February.
   The ABC will begin a search for a new head of its television networks immediately and said it hoped to make an appointment early this year.

O’Brien to Classification Board
Lesley O’Brien has been appointed Director of the Classification Board for three years from 1 January 2013.
   Ms O’Brien has been Deputy Director since January 2011 and replaces Donald McDonald whose term expires 31 December 2012.
   Ms O’Brien has been a senior executive at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, most recently as General Manager of ABC Publishing.

Davis to ADB
Former Director-General of AusAID, Bruce Davis has been appointed Vice-President, Administration and Corporate Management at the Asian Development Bank.
   Mr Davis is currently Australia’s Ambassador to Ireland.
