More information is available from this PS News link. Exhibitions at Archive Two new free exhibitions have opened at the National Film and Sound Archive. One of the exhibitions, CineCity Canberra, explores films made in Australia in the year of Canberra's birth, 1913; the history of Canberra's (and Queanbeyan's) cinemas; and films made in the Canberra region. The other, Telling the World Bert Ive, Pioneer of Australia's Documentary Heritage focuses on the Federal Government’s first cinematographer and stills photographer. Design network announced The establishment of an Australian Design Integration Network has been announced. The new Network is part of efforts to develop and promote design led innovation as part of the national cultural policy,Creative Australia. Inaugural membership of the Steering Committee is to include representatives from the CSIRO, Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, Enterprise Connect Creative Industries Innovation Centre, University of Technology Sydney, Queensland University of Technology, Swinburne University, RMIT and Blue Sky Design. Foley is top woman The Chief of Materials Science and Engineering at the CSIRO, Dr Cathy Foley has been named the NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year. Heading the CSIRO Division for the past 28 years, Dr Foley was honoured with the award by the NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell. Mr O’Farrell said Dr Foley had pursued “ground-breaking research in all areas of science, winning not only numerous accolades but also the respect and admiration of her peers.” He said she had actively promoted the role of women in physics and science. High Court judge welcomed The High Court of Australia has officially welcomed new Justice Patrick Keane to the bench at a swearing-in ceremony in Canberra. Justice Keane is the 50th appointee to the High Court since Federation. Kiaps now eligible for medal Applications for the Police Overseas Service Medal have formally opened for Australian Kiaps who served in Papua New Guinea after World War Two. The Governor-General made a declaration under the Police Overseas Service Medal Regulations to recognise the work of ‘Kiaps’, former patrol officers who were members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary between 1949 and 1973. Australian police officers who served with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary during the same period of time will also be eligible to apply. Archives republishes tribute The National Archives has republished a tribute to Marion Mahony Griffin's artistic skills in recognition of her contribution to the design of Canberra. The new edition of A Vision Splendid: How the Griffins imagined Australia's capital includes a fully illustrated set of Marion's artworks for the Federal Capital Design Competition and has been republished to meet popular demand. The book was originally published in 2002. Satellite contracts signed NBN Co has signed a contract for the launch of two next-generation satellites to deliver high-speed broadband to Australians living in rural and remote areas. The contract was awarded to the European consortium Arianespace and, once launched, NBN Co’s two next generation satellites will deliver fast, reliable and affordable broadband speeds of 25 mbps download and 5 mbps upload. The two satellites will be launched separately in 2015 from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. ACMA warns on SMS scam The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is warning people against a new SMS scam doing the rounds. ACMA said there had been a number of reports from consumers receiving an SMS saying their mobile phone number had won you a prize in a lottery they didn’t enter. It said such messages should be ignored, reported and deleted. Reports can be made by forwarding the message to ACMA on 0429 999 888 Menzies Library turns 50 The Australian National University’s (ANU) R.G. Menzies Library is celebrating 50 years since its opening by Queen Elizabeth II. Celebratory events will include special heritage tours of the building, public lectures, and an exhibition, 50 years of ANU and the University Library, which will highlight the history and changes in the heritage building, the Library, the people, collections, and technological developments then and now.
