AGCTO charts course
for Twitter courses
The Department of Finance and Deregulation is considering putting on a series of practical courses on social media for the Australian Public Service and is seeking input from potential participants.
The Australian Government Chief Technoly Officer, John Sheridan, (AGCTO) announced the idea in a statement which said the focus on the courses would be on assisting APS staff to engage online with confidence and helping agencies create meaningful strategic approaches to online engagement, regardless of the specific tools or social media used.
“To create appropriate content, we will collaborate with leading Australian agencies and organisations including Twitter to collate best practices and case studies from around Australia and the world,” Mr Sheridan said.
“Each course would include relevant information, resources, discussion and hands-on experience. Attendees could work through a number of hypothetical situations (including their own if they wish) and develop new skills that could be applied immediately in their agency.”
He said one of the proposes courses - Using social media in the Public Service - could be expected to cover an introduction to social media; understanding online engagement; how to determine the right approach, tone, tools and strategy for any situation; online community development; and professional versus personal.
He said topics such as building a public narrative; dealing with online conflict; iterative policy; monitoring social media (for individual users, topics, groups); and where to from here would also be covered.
The CTO said another proposed course - Managing social media in your organisation and developing an online engagement strategy – would be based around existing strategies; monitoring social media; appropriate strategies for specific goals; and managing staff online.
He said analysis tools; building a strategy; and the role of “apps” and mobile computing would also feature.
