DAFF's cultivated play topples favouritesThe Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in Canberra caused a boilover last week to win the grand final of the Public Service Football Association (PSFA) lunchtime soccer competition.
DAFF beat defending champions and hot favourites Australian National University (ANU) 3-2 in a keenly contested decider held on ANU’s Willows Oval. Sixteen teams from Government Departments and Agencies across Canberra took part in the 2013 competition, with the top eight sides battling out a tight finals series over recent weeks for the rights to the PSFA Cup.
ANU looked unbeatable, having won every match through the home-and-away season. But DAFF peaked at the right time of the year, downing ANU twice during the finals series to steal the silverware.
In blustery conditions, the grand final was highlighted by some cracking goals to both sides. ANU’s skilful outfit enjoyed the bulk of possession, but it was DAFF’s ability to capitalise on the counter-attack that won them the match.
In the race for the Harry Braknys Shield – contested by the bottom eight teams – the Housing Industry Association is playing Airservices Australia in this week’s grand final.
