Australia will become more embedded in regional development efforts under a new five-year plan launched by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

The Centre is at the forefront of the challenge to reduce hunger and increase stability and prosperity by fostering international agricultural research partnerships with countries that can benefit from Australia's expertise in a range of climatic zones.

Under the new plan, the Centre will become more market-focused and more visible in the Government's development agenda and "economic diplomacy" focused on a future of shared prosperity.

Its work is central to the Government's approach to overseas development assistance - building economic prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Lives at stake

The new plan focuses on supporting more productive, market-led agricultural systems that engage smallholder farmers and encourage countries to tap into new opportunities.

The strategy, which embraces the recommendations of the 2013 Independent Review of the Centre, places greater emphasis on implementing interdisciplinary research.

It also emphasises tackling gender inequality, supporting women in improving their livelihoods and engaging with markets while committing the Centre to rigorous performance benchmarks.

The Centre will continue to produce excellent collaborative research while working with others to achieve broader development aims with a greater emphasis on more diverse and innovative partnerships with the private sector, non-government organisations and emerging economies.
