Looming disaster in aged care

Vice-Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University , Professor Greg Craven

(pictured), will chair an eight-member Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group that will advise the Government on teacher education.

Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne said he had asked the group to conduct a benchmark research study of world's best practice in initial teacher education programs.

"We want to build on world standards for initial teacher education program and explore how best practice can be implemented into teaching and classrooms in our own schools," the Minister said.

Reporting later this year, the group will undertake extensive public and stakeholder consultation.

It will focus on three key areas - pedagogical approaches to teaching and the different ways that teaching and learning occur, how well teachers understand their subjects, and opportunities for pre-service teachers to put theory into practice.

Commissioner Ryan's warning

Mr Pyne said the group would identify the main areas for improvement in current teacher education, and will recommend timeframes for implementation.

It will also incorporate the work initially planned to be undertaken by a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Ministerial Advisory Board to ensure these subjects get more attention during teacher preparation.

A review by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), which was ordered in October 2013, has been scrapped.
