Planning starts for NDIS workforce

A report into workforce issues to help develop a strategy in the lead-up to the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been ordered by the Government.

National Disability Services (NDS), the peak body for non-government disability service organisations, had been contracted to deliver the report, Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator Mitch Fifield, said.

Mr Fifield has met representatives of the NDS to identify priority areas.

The NDIS Workforce Strategy would be critical to the Government's agenda to work with the disability sector to achieve the best results, he said.

Report commissioned

Senator Fifield said the rollout of the NDIS would create significant employment demand and opportunities in the disability sector, and the Government was committed to working with the sector to prepare for this change.

He said the size of the disability workforce would have more than doubled by 2019-20, and the workforce would need to have the capacity to respond to the NDIS funding model, which places the consumer at the centre and in control of their funding package.

The report will prioritise supporting and retaining the existing workforce, ensuring the supply of work to support people with a disability, and building the capacity of the workforce to adapt to the new funding model of person-centred choice under the NDIS.

The report will address workforce needs in the current trial sites, as well as any issues that will develop when full national rollout occurs.

The Final Report will be delivered to the Government in August 2014.
