AFP awards recognise courage, commitment

Some 95 staff members of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and its partner Agencies have been presented with honours and awards to mark the AFP's Foundation Day

Recipients at the ceremony in Canberra included those who recognised for their bravery, excellence in innovation and commitment to high-quality operational work.

Commissioner Tony Negus said the recipients performed roles that sometimes demanded extraordinary things of them.

"The many and varied roles they perform are equally as important and what they do each and every day makes a difference across our nation," he said.

The AFP Bravery Medal, which is considered the AFP's highest award, was presented to ACT Policing Constable Clint Gordon who saved the life of 97-year-old man trapped in a house fire in Kambah, ACT in June 2013.

Placing his own life in danger, Constable Gordon entered the burning building and located the man in thick smoke and brought him to safety. He then returned to put out the fire before it could take hold.

Other awards were presented to AFP appointees for their work in the dismantling of an organised crime syndicate involving corrupt Commonwealth officials working at Sydney International Airport (Operation Marca).

AFP members involved in responding to a maritime incident on Christmas Island on 15 December 2010 (Operation Pallarenda) were awarded the Commissioner's Group Citation for Conspicuous Conduct.

Commissioner Negus said the Foundation Day Honours and Awards program, established in 2004, was an important day for the AFP where the great work done by appointees was formally recognised across the whole organisation and by the community.
