The Australian National Preventive Health Agency has announced that the AFL Players' Association (AFLPA) has thrown its weight behind the Agency's National Binge Drinking Strategy
West Coast Eagles player, Nic Naitanui, Collingwood captain, Scott Pendlebury, and Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield are spearheading the AFLPA's support of the Agency's Be the Influence - Tackling Binge Drinking initiative.
Be the Influence - Tackling Binge Drinking promotes responsible drinking, and demonstrates how the popularity of sport can be used to positively influence young people and give them the confidence to be 'Strong Enough to Say Enough' to binge drinking.
Each player has recorded a personal video, sharing their own stories, and passing on advice about how to identify limits and stand up to the peer pressure to binge drink.
In total, 16 national sporting organisations, including the AFLPA, Football Federation of Australia, Surfing Australia and Netball Australia, have pledged to 'Be the Influence' and tackle the problems associated with youth binge drinking in Australia.
Binge drinking imposes a huge toll on communities throughout Australia, with alcohol contributing to the three leading causes of death among adolescents - unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide.
The Be the Influence - Tackling Binge Drinking initiative aims to encourage a more responsible attitude towards alcohol consumption among 16-24 year olds by providing them with the tools they need to challenge the acceptability of binge drinking within their peer groups.
The initiative has a strong online and social media presence, as well as being active through a number of key channels Australia wide, including music festivals, sport sponsorship and events.
