PS receives honours for safety

Public Sector Agencies and Organisations were prominent among the winners and finalists for the 9th annual Safe Work Australia Awards announced in Canberra this week to recognise excellence in work health and safety at a national level.

This year, 37 finalists from a range of industries competed across the four categories, drawn from the winners of the 2013 State and Comcare awards.

Finalists included the Royal Australian Navy for a Fatigue Management Trial on HMAS Warramunga that led to better planning of operations and training and a better understanding of levels of fatigue the crew could face so as to lessen the impact or prevent the onset of fatigue.

Health and safety professionial Robert Williams of the Department of Defence - Joint Health Command was a finalist for developing a register to ease safety compliance and promote consistency that is now in place at eight facilities in the Southern NSW Region, with modified versions used in Navy and Army units.

The Department of Justice's Health and Safety Officer at Grampians Regional Prison, Phyllip Bix was highly commended for going above and beyond his role to make work health and safety a priority.

The joint winners of the Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety by an Employee Award were Paramedic Jedda McGlinchey from Ambulance Victoria and Rodney Cook from the Northcoast Institute of TAFE in NSW.

Finalists also included SA Water for their work to make River Murray weir structures safer and the City of Charles Sturt for eliminating risky processes in road and footpath repairs.
