Senior Appointments

New Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism

Miles Armitage (pictured) has been appointed as Australia’s next Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, replacing Bill Fisher in the role that is central to the coordination and promotion of Australia's international counter-terrorism efforts.

Mr Armitage is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently Assistant Secretary Counter-Terrorism Branch.

He was most recently Ambassador to Timor-Leste and has also served in Manila, New York and Islamabad.

Calvert-Jones for NGA Council

John Calvert-Jones has been appointed to the Council of the National Gallery of Australia.

Mr Calvert-Jones is currently a Trustee of the McClelland Gallery in Victoria and is a Director of the Kimberley Foundation Australia, which focuses on research as well as the preservation and promotion of Kimberley rock art.

Mr Calvert-Jones previously served on the National Gallery council between 2006 and 2012.

The appointment is for three years.


G-G to be Colombo patron

The Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove has agreed to be the Patron of the Government's New Colombo Plan.

Under the New Colombo Plan, growing numbers of Australian undergraduate students are already taking advantage of opportunities to broaden their study and work experiences in the region in this pilot year.


Heap takes on new ABC role

Rebecca Heap has been appointed to the newly created role, Head of TV Strategy and Digital Products at the ABC.

Ms Heap will join the network on May 19.

The appointment will see the digital and strategic planning functions brought together under the leadership of this new position.

Ms Heap has held senior strategy and content positions both at Foxtel, where she was Director, Content and Partnerships, and Austar, in her role as General Manager, Strategy and Programming.


Jacob to chair Australia-India Council

Ashok Jacob has been appointed as the Chair of the Australia-India Council (AIC) from 2014 to 2019.

Mr Jacob's impressive business record and extensive contacts in both countries will assist him to progress the vital work of the AIC in strengthening Australia's relationship with India.

He is the Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Ellerston Capital and also a director of Crown Ltd, Consolidated Press Holdings, Visy Australia, Thorney Opportunities Ltd, MRF Ltd (Chennai, India) and the Malayala Manorama Newspaper Group (Kottayam, India).
