APSC launches Diversity Awards

The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) has launched the 2014 APS Diversity Awards.

An initiative of the Australian Public Service Diversity Council, the awards are divided into two categories covering Indigenous and disability employment.

A spokesperson for the Diversity Council said that in a rapidly-changing world, developing a Public Service that mirrored the diversity of the community it served was more important than ever.

"The Diversity Council has long been aware of the hard work and commitment that employees in Public Service Agencies have demonstrated in improving the diversity of the workforce," the spokesperson said.

Reward for Agencies' efforts

"Many Public Servants go well beyond their formal duties in working to improve diversity outcomes."

The spokesperson said that without this drive, enthusiasm and passion, the Public Service diversity agenda would stall.

"It is about time that those who contribute most to improving workplace diversity are recognised and praised," the spokesperson said.

The awards will recognise and reward the commitment and creative and innovative efforts of Agencies to improve the diversity of the APS workforce.

They will also provide an opportunity to showcase successful diversity employment strategies and promote good practice.

"It doesn't matter if it's a big-budget recruitment program or a small initiative involving one or two people. The point is, has it made a difference?" the spokesperson said.

Nominations are now open and run until 5 September. Assessments and decisions will be completed in October and a ceremony will be held on 6 November.
